As expected as soon as the water temperature reached 70 degrees, the bite exploded and all species began to feed aggressively! The weather is beautiful and on days without any wind the Gulf of Mexico has been as flat as a mirror and the water is pristine clean making for exciting sight casting opportunities. Offshore “Grouper Fever” began with the opening of the season on April 1st, with lots of nice Gags & Reds coming to the cleaning tables. Inshore and near-shore fishing is “Red Hot” for Spanish Mackerel, Speckled Sea Trout, Pompano, Flounder, Cobia, Bluefish and big schools of Redfish!! Being on the water as much as I’ve been lately, it’s been hard to write fishing reports as often as I’d like but wanted to include some of the notes I’ve received from recent clients as we’ve been having a blast!
Hello, Captain Red Ed, I’m attaching the 10 best photos from our trip with you, (see the photos in our Gallery). We had great time fishing with you. We applied everything you taught us about catching trout and had a successful day on the water yesterday. We caught three keepers (16″ Trout) and pan fried them. They were delicious! A Beautiful Site to See! Redfish tails flagging me down from 200 yards away, tempting me to get within casting range is what I dream of when planning fishing trips. I have seen this site on the Indian River, Mosquito Lagoon, Homosassa Flats and many other beautiful places located in our wonderful state. I just came off the first guided trip of the year for me and it was on one of Florida’s most majestic coastlines, the Homosassa area. Captain “Red Ed” was our guide for the day and he provided my two buddies and myself with a great day on the water. We caught 9 Spotted Sea Trout throughout the day in various locations in his 24 ft. Custom Carolina Skiff. We experienced some of the best weather of the year thus far and couldn’t have been in a more beautiful place for the day. Capt. “Red Ed” treated us with his local knowledge of the water and numerous “Rock” islands that pepper this awesome region. Local knowledge is a must when boating and fishing in the region. Just ask Ed about his recent experience with his lower unit on his 150 H.P. Mercury engine hitting a rock and what it can cost you in repairs. I always book a guide when I fish this area and it always pays as I don’t want to spend the $3000-$4000 in engine repairs if I hit bottom. Homosassa is a great area with abundant wildlife from Manatees, River Otters, Alligators, to some of the best fishing the state has to offer. Capt. “Red Ed” will put you on some fish and take you to places that you never thought existed anymore. As we didn’t have all the e-mail address’ from the show entered before the last fishing report, we would again like to thank everyone who came by to visit with us at The 33rd Annual World Fishing & Outdoor Exposition in Suffern, New York, March 4th through March 7th. The show was a MAJOR success with over 50,000 attendees at the four day show and we look forward to fishing with all our new friends here in our little piece of paradise; Homosassa, one of Florida’s last best kept secrets! As we were the ONLY exhibitors from Florida our booth was constantly crowded and yes we did get to see some SNOW! At this show we did a drawing at the end of each day and gave away four FREE charters! The four winners of the FREE charters were Rob Nebel, Ray Gelormino, Damon Mastrangelo and Chris Schuchts. Their charters are good for one to four people, and include everything except lunch, beverages and gratuity; trip must be taken on a mutually agreeable date within one year from the date of the Suffern show. We’ll definitely be back next year!
