Homosassa Fishing!

Friends: The weather is getting warmer and the Homosassa fishing is heating up! Lots of different species being CAUGHT as the Gulf water temperature reaches 80 degrees, with Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, Speckled Trout, Spanish Mackerel, Cobia and Grouper all feeding aggressively!!

Captain Billy, fishing out of Crystal River, reported a 220 pound Silver King, CAUGHT last week after a 2 1/2 hour battle! Many Redfish over the 27 inch slot limit are being CAUGHT on the outside edges of the spoil islands on artificial and cut bait. Watch for the “push” or V-wakes of Redfish, the sight of which makes for heart-stopping anticipation. Cobia have invaded the flats and are located often swimming inches off the backs of large Stingrays.

We’ve had many days recently where the hasn’t been any wind and the water is flat calm and gin clear and many anglers are seeing the fish attack baits. As most of you know, there’s nothing more exciting then actually seeing the bite. While we were drifting over the lush grass beds of Homosassa Bay in about 9 feet of water, I saw a Spanish Mackerel, coming from a distance and whack a Berkley Gulp bait, so hard at warp speed that it almost yanked me off the bow of the boat! Spanish Mackerel are fast swimming, toothy predators that have been clocked at 35 miles per hour.

There aren’t many places left in Florida, where you can drift in the Gulf of Mexico, on a holiday weekend and not see another boat anywhere you look! Though that will change when Scallop Season opens on July 1st, as that is by far our busiest time of the year, and we expect the start of this season to be extra busy with the Fourth of July, falling on a Saturday. If you haven’t reserved your date yet, to snorkel for this sweet tasting treasure, call soon, as most of July is already booked. Scallop season ends on September 10th.

I’d like to apologize to those of you that for some unknown reason didn’t receive our fishing report and pictures from our recent adventure of a lifetime to Costa Rica. That report is posted on our new and improved web-site, www.HomosassaRedfish.com We are currently working on a new e-mail program that will resolve any of these problems in the future.

We’d love to hear your input on our new site as we believe it’s one of the best fishing sites on the net. Don’t forget Father’s Day on June 21st, a gift certificate for a day on the water, would please any Dad! We have partnered with the Chassahowitzka Hotel and created a package called the “GOURMET GETAWAY”, where you get to fish on two different rivers, the Homosassa and Chassahowitzka, for two days of action that you’ll never forget, full details available on the site.

Due to popular demand, we have added a Recipe Page and if you have any favorite fish recipes you’d like to submit, please forward those to RedEd@homosassaredfish.com. Come bend a rod with us in one of Florida’s last best kept secrets, the beautiful and productive waters of Homosassa and Chassahowitzka!!

Let’s go CATCHING,
Captain Red ED
